Spot trading volume across major crypto exchanges climbed 19% in August to $510.4 billion. The gain outpaced a 15.9% rise in derivatives volume and marked the biggest monthly increase of 2026.
The rebound followed July’s trough of $429 billion, the weakest month of the year. Derivatives volume also recovered, reaching $3.51 trillion after falling below $3.1 trillion a month earlier.
Crypto Spot Volume Spent Most of 2026 in Retreat
Major exchanges handled $931.8 billion in spot volume in January, according to WuBlockchain data. By July, that figure had dropped 54%.
Volume fell to roughly $429 billion by July, the lowest month of the year. Derivatives held a far steadier line over the same stretch, staying between $3.03 trillion and $3.69 trillion.
The futures-to-spot volume ratio reached 7.06x in July, up from 6.21x in June. It eased to 6.87x in August as spot volume grew faster than derivatives.

Binance Leads a Broad Rebound as Bitcoin Rallies
The spot recovery was broad. Volume rose at 13 of the 14 exchanges tracked, with Uniswap the only decliner at 18.7%.
Binance led both markets, posting $243.1 billion in spot volume and $1.67 trillion in futures. Its spot share reached 47.6%, up from 43.9% in January. Hyperliquid recorded $264.7 billion in futures volume, its strongest month of the year.
Concentration cuts both ways. The three largest venues handled 64.8% of spot volume and 74.7% of derivatives volume in August.
The volume rebound came alongside a sharp price rally and renewed institutional interest. Bitcoin (BTC) gained about 25% in August, its strongest monthly performance since November 2024.
US-listed Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) attracted $3.52 billion in net inflows during the month. That marked their strongest month this year.
Still, one strong month does not reverse the year. Spot volume remains 45% below its January level, and the futures-to-spot ratio still sits near its 2026 highs.
