Every paycheck eventually has to pay for something: rent, groceries, transport, or bills.
Stablecoins can move between wallets in seconds. But that does not mean an employee can spend the money immediately. They may still need to convert the stablecoins into local currency, move the money to a bank account, and pay fees along the way.
That's becoming more important as companies offer stablecoin payroll.
Galaxy Payroll Group announced its own service on Sept. 2, with a rollout planned through September. Deel, which already offers stablecoin payouts, updated its employer guidance on Sept. 17. Deel stressed that paying with stablecoins does not remove an employer's existing wage, tax, withholding, or reporting obligations.
Neither announcement tells us how many employees are choosing stablecoins or how much money they save by doing so.
But they highlight a basic question: Who pays the costs of getting a paycheck from the employer to a form the employee can actually spend?
Stablecoins can reduce some payment costs, especially for international transfers. But they can also shift some costs and responsibilities from the employer to the employee.
It depends on how the payroll system works.
A company could use stablecoins behind the scenes while the employee still receives normal fiat currency. Or the employee could receive stablecoins directly and be responsible for converting them into local currency.
Those are very different experiences for the worker.
Employers still have to meet wage rules
Paying someone in stablecoins does not automatically change the employer's legal obligations.
Employers still need to determine how much an employee is owed, what deductions apply, what currency the wage is denominated in, and how the payment satisfies local wage laws.
US federal rules provide one example. The regulation covering payment of minimum wages and overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act specifies cash or a negotiable instrument payable at par.
That does not mean every type of crypto compensation is prohibited. Rules can differ for additional compensation, independent contractors, and workers in other countries.
But employers cannot assume that an employee agreeing to receive crypto removes existing wage requirements.
The details also matter when fees are involved.
Suppose an employer promises an employee $2,000 in take-home pay but sends $2,000 in stablecoins. If the employee then has to pay fees to convert those stablecoins into usable money, they may end up with less than the promised $2,000.
Employers and workers therefore need to know exactly what has been promised: a certain amount of local currency, a certain amount of stablecoins, or a certain amount after fees.
That should be clear before payday, not discovered when the employee tries to pay the rent.
A $2,000 stablecoin paycheck may not mean $2,000 to spend
Consider a simple example.
A worker receives $2,000 in dollar stablecoins. If converting and withdrawing that money costs 1%, the worker ends up with $1,980.
The 1% figure is only an example, not a current market rate. The point is that somebody has to pay the cost of converting the stablecoins.
Stablecoin payroll could still be cheaper than the alternative. An international worker might previously have paid high bank or remittance fees.
The important comparison is therefore not just the blockchain transaction fee. It's the total cost of getting the paycheck into a form the worker can actually use.
Those costs can include withdrawal fees and conversion fees. They can also be hidden in the exchange rate offered when stablecoins are converted into local currency.
Currency risk matters too.
A dollar stablecoin such as USDC may remain close to $1, but an employee might live in a country where rent and groceries are priced in another currency.
If the exchange rate between the dollar and that local currency changes, the local value of the paycheck changes too.
Some workers may want dollar exposure. For others, it creates another variable in their monthly budget.
Speed has a similar problem. Receiving stablecoins in seconds is useful if the worker can also spend or convert them quickly. It's less useful if converting them into local currency takes hours or days.
The relevant question isn't how quickly the blockchain confirms the payment. It's how quickly the employee can actually use the money.
Receiving the tokens is only part of payday
A stablecoin paycheck can also create practical problems that do not exist in the same form with a normal bank deposit.
Circle's USDC terms, for example, distinguish between customers eligible to redeem USDC directly with Circle and other holders. The terms also cover blocked addresses, legal restrictions, and mistaken transfers.
That means receiving USDC does not necessarily mean an employee can redeem it directly with Circle.
Many workers may instead rely on an exchange or another service to convert their USDC. If that service restricts the account or delays a withdrawal, the employee can have money in a wallet without being able to use it.
Taxes are also an issue. Under the IRS's virtual-currency guidance, payment for services in virtual currency is measured in dollars when received. Crypto paid as wages is also subject to employment-tax and reporting requirements.
Selling or converting the crypto later can also create additional recordkeeping requirements. A dollar stablecoin held for a short period may produce little or no gain or loss. But workers may still need records showing when they received and disposed of it.
The UK's employment-token guidance also covers Income Tax and National Insurance obligations for cryptoassets received through employment. In other words, a dollar peg does not make employment or tax rules disappear.
For employers, that means stablecoin payroll is about much more than sending tokens quickly. They need to consider deductions, taxes, conversion costs, employee records, and what happens when a worker cannot access or convert a payment.
Stablecoins can still make payroll better. They may reduce the cost of international payments, make money available faster, or give workers access to dollars when they want them. More of CryptoSlate's stablecoin coverage explores how those systems are developing.
But the real test is simple: fast transfers are useful only if the employee can actually use the money.
For workers, what matters isn't how quickly a stablecoin reaches their wallet, but how much of their paycheck is available when the rent is due.
