A new 24-karat Pokémon gold figure of Gholdengo sells for ¥1.54 million, or about $9,800. At current spot prices, the gold inside it is worth roughly $2,080.
That gap means buyers pay nearly five times the metal’s value. The 6-centimeter collectible weighs 15 grams and goes on sale only in Japan.
Inside the Pokémon Gold Figure
Japanese gold goods brand SGC made the piece for The Great Gold Exhibition. Sales run at the Yokohama Takashimaya department store from September 30 to October 5. The figure stands on a tiered black base with a gold nameplate.
The character choice was deliberate. Gholdengo is No. 1000 in the National Pokédex, and its body consists of coins. The Steel and Ghost type first appeared in the 2022 games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Its signature ability, Good as Gold, blocks status moves from rivals.
Two display-only statues accompany the release. A 120-centimeter Gholdengo carries about 730 sheets of gold leaf, while a 50-centimeter Pikachu uses roughly 200.
Collectors Pay for the Brand, Not the Metal
Gold traded near $4,317 a troy ounce on Wednesday, according to market data. That puts one gram at about $139, so the 15-gram Pokémon gold figure holds roughly $2,080 of metal. The remaining $7,700 or so pays for design, craftsmanship, and the Pokémon name.
Meanwhile, the metal has cooled lately. Gold fell about 7% over the past month as hawkish Federal Reserve signals hit non-yielding assets. Still, it trades about 15.5% above year-ago levels despite slipping from its January record.
Fund flows tell a firmer story. Global gold funds posted their second-biggest monthly inflow in August. Some Swiss investors pair gold with Bitcoin as a hedge against US debt. Circle’s Arc blockchain also added its first tokenized gold asset, a token tied to vaulted bullion.
Collectors, however, chase a different premium. Pokémon cards outpaced Bitcoin and stocks over three months this summer. Polymarket launched Pokémon card prediction markets in August.
The Pokémon gold figure tests the same idea. Its buyers pay for scarcity and fandom rather than bullion. Resale prices could show how far the brand stretches gold’s value.
